Want an “A” on Your Papers? Here’s How
It doesn’t matter if you are enrolled in a traditional or an online degree program, you will need to be able to write lengthy term papers along the way. But, writing good papers is easier than it may first seem if you follow a few rules.
In most instances, students are given a fairly wide choice of topics when they are asked to write a paper. By choosing a topic that interests them, and is likely to interest their instructor, a paper is apt to be better researched, better written, and better received.
Next, make some decisions about what you want to say about your chosen topic. That will help you shape your ideas and select the research materials which will be most helpful to you.
Follow that with a well developed outline. Include in your outline a well crafted introductory paragraph, major topics, subtopics, and a concluding paragraph. Of course, you can revise your outline as appropriate.
Now comes the tough part, the actual writing. The key is to begin with strong topic sentences that generalize about the statements and subjects to come. If you have constructed a good outline, you should be OK.
Whatever you do, don’t ignore this tip. Back up and save your outlines and your papers. Not only could you or your professors lose a paper, but you could be asked to defend yourself against a plagiarism charge or revise a paper after turning it in.
Finally, be certain to have someone with solid writing skills read your paper looking for outright errors and ways that your paper might be improved. Although you can and should proofread your papers several times, others are often better at critiquing our work than we are.
Lots of students live in fear of major papers. But, by adhering to the tips above, you can virtually ensure yourself a good grade whenever you are given a major writing assignment.
