ESL Careers: Taking Your ESL Schooling to a Whole New Level
Even though many people start out taking ESL to speak and write proper English, there are other benefits involved. Oh, ESL stands for “English as a Secondary Language.” If you’re wondering how popular ESL training is, the only thing we can tell you is that immigration is at an all time high in the United States. Since this is evident, it’s important to understand that ESL teachers are needed more than ever. However, it’s important to understand that ESL doesn’t just teach you the language, but it also helps you blend in with your surroundings as well.
ESL Requirements for Teaching
In order to be an ESL teacher, you have to earn an undergraduate degree that has concentrated on ESL. It will allow you the opportunity to learn the English language, and give you the ability to teach others down the road. These modern teaching techniques are given through specialized courses and can help you meet the needs of your ESL students. Once you’ve completed the first level, then you are free to get an advanced degree in ESL or take the state license exam. Either way you’ll be ready to start your own teaching career ASAP.
Once they have completed their schooling, most ELS teachers choose to become regular school teachers or to work as professors in community or four-year colleges. It is important to note that to obtain employment as a college professor at any level often requires that the applicant have an advance degree, either a masters or a PHD in ESL.
Now, if you have other daily priorities (such as children), then you may need to take on a part-time teaching career. Keep in mind this is possible, and since ESL can provide flexibility you will be able to do both. Many of the students turned teachers have taught night classes or provided private tutoring because of their daily schedules. Whatever situation you’re in, it’s just nice to know that your ESL career won’t interfere with your personal life. If you’re free to do whatever then you may want to think about teaching foreign employees from various companies.
If you are an ESL student with who likes to travel, you will be excited to discover that ELS teachers are as sought after overseas as they are here, in the States. Although compensation does depend on the country you choose to teach in. If, for example, you decide to travel to Europe, it is likely that you will have to pay your own expenses, so you may not save as much money as in other parts of the world. However, if you decide to travel a bit farther into the Middle Easy or Asia, you will be far more likely to locate a high-paying ESL job. Many of the countries in these areas have a desperately low supply or ESL teachers, while at the same time demand for them is growing.
Other things you should look into when traveling overseas is whether or not the place you work for offers free airfare, accommodations, and living stipend. The best options to include these are China, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Just make sure that you do a little research before signing the dotted line of a new contract. Find out if they are reputable places to work for, try to find other foreign teachers in the area, and whether or not you would fit in with the surroundings.
