ESL: Finding Careers thanks to ESL Training
When you take ESL lessons online, the certified teachers will teach you how to speak and write proper English. If someone hasn’t already told you, ESL stands for “English as a Second Language.” Since immigration is at an all time high, the need for ESL teachers has become greater than ever. Keep in mind though that they don’t only help you learn a new language, they also help you adapt to a new environment. This is extremely true in the United States where immigration is at an all time high. When you graduate you will be able to enjoy all the rewards that come from learning this secondary language.
ESL Teacher Requirements
The first thing you have to do is earn an undergraduate education degree that concentrates on ESL. The goal behind this avenue is to teach you the language first, then focus on showing you how to teach others if you wish to do this as a career. They are given out through various modern teaching techniques that are geared for this day and age. Once you’ve earned your initial degree, the door is left open for a more advanced degree in ESL. All you need to do is take the state license exam to get certified.
Once they have completed their schooling, most ELS teachers choose to become regular school teachers or to work as professors in community or four-year colleges. It is important to note that to obtain employment as a college professor at any level often requires that the applicant have an advance degree, either a masters or a PHD in ESL.
Obviously there will be some obstacles along the way if you’re a parent. So even if you can only do it part-time, a degree in ESL can provide flexibility that allows you to be a parent and a teacher at the same time. Maybe you can teach night classes at a community college, or even offer private tutoring to the public. Whatever the case may be, you’ll be able to utilize your time for your career and your personal life. In fact, if you want to get deep within the teaching society, you might want to look at being hired by companies that need someone to teach English to their foreign employees.
If you’re single and just want to have fun, then traveling overseas could be an option for you. Many ESL teachers find careers in other parts of the world, and the money in some places is unbelievable. Obviously this all depends on where you go and whether the ESL teacher supply is limited, but the more the demand for you, the more money you’re going to get to teach English. Places over in Europe won’t pay as much as places in the Middle East and Asia. Just keep this in mind when you’re making your decision.
Many schools and programs in these areas offer qualified teachers free airfare, room and board, as well as a generous living stipend. The countries that are known to provide the best deals to ESL teachers include: China, South Korea, the Philippines and Thailand.
Just make sure that you do a little research before signing the dotted line of a new contract. Find out if they are reputable places to work for, try to find other foreign teachers in the area, and whether or not you would fit in with the surroundings. Just post a few questions on the ESL website forums and someone will be able to help you find your way to a new career.
