Moscow Sing-Along
First off I want to thank crystalmonger and polskarezystans for helping me with this video. If it wasn’t for crystalmonger’s “Are You in or Out” AMV, I would never have discovered this song. And if it wasn’t for polskarezystans putting the lyrics on his description, I would never have been able to put them on. Thank you both. Now for the information. “Moskau” is a single by the German pop-act Dschinghis Khan. Its original release was in 1979. In 2004 Moskau became a surprise hit on the Internet due to the sharing of a performance of the song from the group’s glory days. Blogging viewers of the video commented that the wild disco dances, retro instrumentation, and happy German vocals are hilarious and oddly uplifting. The song and its video have become an internet meme. In Japan, the song created a separate internet meme in 2005 from a Flash animation with nonsensical Japanese lyrics based on the original German being misheard as Japanese (see mondegreen and soramimi). The song is also a playable song on the Sony PSP game Taiko Drum Master Portable 2, as is “Dragostea din tei”, another song turned into an Internet meme. The song has also been covered by German black metal band Black Messiah. The English Version is called “Moscow.”
