Cold War: Space Race – part 5/5

1949 – 1961 In the mid-50s the Soviet Union seems to be forging ahead. In October 1957, the first Soviet satellite Sputnik orbits the earth – to the dismay and fear of the US, frustrated by its own ineffectual space program. In 1961, the Soviets launch Yuri Gagarin into space. @STOPTHEEU I guess, but I was just saying that for a show supposedly about the space race I was expecting more info on the actual space race. Most of this stuff is about the missile defence systems witch were being developed at the time. I guess it’s related but I would have renamed this program to something like missile systems or something.

About MAD, it seems to me like a stupid idea. All it takes is for one psycho to think they can get away with it and the world is dead.

@Disthron If the Russians were not peaceful people then the cold war would have ended in tragedy.

    From Great Britain.

Rule Britannia, Long live Russia, God bless America.

You know, for a show that was apparently about the space race it didn’t seem to have much about it in there. Still pretty interesting I guess.

The footage of Gagarin’s amazing achievement gives me goosebumps:) The USA really were stunned by the USSR’s tremendous technological capability.
