Different Forms Of IP
Apart from the tangible things or properties like buildings, homes, vehicles and so on that are protected by law, there are several other forms of properties like intellectual property (IP).
There are four primary types of IP which are as follows:
Copyrights: This form deals with the original creative works’ protection. They provide legal guarding for original works or assets just like literary pieces, films, songs etc. They allow the owners to make use of different forms of their idea in several mediums with exclusive rights of adaptation, replication and so on for a particular period of time.
Patents: Patents are lawful rights which permit investors to prevent others from promoting their invention. They typically apply to biological discoveries, scientific theories, and inventions in the field of technology. Like copyrights, patents can be available to the inventors for only a particular span of time ahead of the expiration date. Patents normally last for 20 years after the application filing date.
Trademarks: This type of IP includes words, phrases, logos, symbols, designs, or devices that are used in association with a specific good so as to differentiate it from other goods of that industry. The application of trademarks is for identification purpose and as soon as they’ve been registered, they will be lawfully safeguarded.
Trade secrets: These are practices, formulas, designs, recipes, processes, or ideas which a company uses in order to obtain leverage in its industry. Usually, trade secrets are kept by one’s own means, as opposed to being safeguarded through government policies like patents and copyrights. Trade secrets lack legitimate protection and so, anyone will be free to use them once they are leaked to the public.
The mentioned forms of IP may be different from each other, however they also have a number of things in common. With trade secrets as an exception, all of them are recognized by law in particular ways that allow the property owners to do lawful actions against the infringer and then receive compensation for infringement.
