Home Brew Beer: How To Create Your Own Ale

For hundreds of years, people have been brewing their own alcoholic drinks, which includes home brew beer. At different points in history, most countries had restrictions on the practice. Now, although there may still be restrictions in some countries and limits to the alcohol content in others, it is often legal to engage in this pastime.

There are hundreds of recipes available for brewing different types of beer; some are available on the internet and there are also a lot of books dedicated to the subject. However, most beers will contain at least some water, hops, barley and yeast.

Beer mostly consists of water, which means that good quality water is essential for the brewing process. It needs to have a mineral content because the yeast, which will be discussed later in the article, needs a mineral content to properly ferment. This means distilled water cannot be used, but most spring waters are a good choice.

Barley contains minerals and has a sugar content; both of these are used during fermentation. Before the barley is introduced into the mixture it can also be processed with heat to change its color and taste. The more it is heated, the more sugar will be turned into starch, and the darker it will become. This is the basic process used to create darker ales.

Hops are bitter so are used to balance out the taste of the beer. However, by boiling them for different amounts of time, the taste can be changed. Boiling them for a very long time can create a very bitter tasting beer, whereas boiling them for just a few minutes will create a more aromatic brew.

Of course, it will need an alcohol content, which is where the yeast comes in. Yeast is a single-celled organism that consumes sugar and produces alcohol; this makes it useful in all fermentation processes. There are two different types of yeast the home-brewer is likely to use. Ale yeast is often the most popular because it works at room temperature and no special storage facility is necessary. The second is lager yeast – this is necessary for the production of beers such as Pilsner and Budweiser; however, it needs a cold environment to work.

There is quite a lot of equipment needed to get started. However, many specialist stores sell pre-made kits containing everything needed to brew the first batch at a lower cost. Most hobbyists will experiment with different recipes until finding their favorite. Generally speaking though, to brew a beer, the barley and hops will need to be boiled in the spring water for a set amount of time. After the mixture has cooled, it will need to be mixed with yeast and sealed in a fermentation tank for up to three weeks, which is when it can be siphoned into bottles.

Even after hundreds of years and the availability of cheap beers in stores, home brew beer continues to be a hobby for millions of people around the world.
