Alternative music in the nineties was a fantastic time to discover great new bands and original music. Bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and the Pixies were all over the musical landscape. Will the best new bands of today match the style, originality, songs and global stardom that the classic independent or alternative bands achieved. Once radio was the top place to find great new bands and alternate music. Now the best place is the Internet. Is there a true alternative music sound in 2010 and very soon 2011? The styles of music portrayed as alternative music are now being re hashed as modern music, of coarse there are new sounds as recording with a computer and software crates its own brand of production.
Contemporary singers like Nick Cave are one of the few music writers who a creating contemporary alternative and original music styles. He sometimes creates new music scenarios drawing from the past but in the end it is an original take on a form of music like folk, blues or alternative rock and roll. if you think about it artists such as Nick cave may have a hard time getting a record deal now as the climate for new and original alternative music artists is not really what is on a record companies mind. New pop stares like Lady Gaga may dominate the scene with visually stunning stage shows. She seems very fond of true alternative music stars and artists like Iggy Pop and David Bowie however, her music is tightly wound up in dance, house and modern pop, not alternative music.
Looking at the glass half full their is still great hope for new bands and people seeking new alternative music. the internet indeed has created a situation where kids sit and listen to MP3s all day however. The proliferation of live concerts and rising prices in tickets for live performances may be a direct result of the eventual boredom of just staring at youtube videos of new alternative bands or listening to alternative music on the ipod. As CDs sales have dropped to nothing live shows by bands has become a huge money making strategy to get revenue for new and different alternative music bands. There are millions of teenagers and young adults who are tired of the computer monitor as their only musical experience live music and cool shows by local alternative bands can shake a new awakening in the hearts of fans and within themselves as they search for new alternative music.
