Vince Lombardi once said “Winning isn’t everything, its the only thing”. For most of the mainstream sports media, that couldn’t be more true. Countless hours on sports talk radio are spent deriding NBA players like Charles Barkley and NFL players like Dan Marino for never winning a championship. Simply stated, no one remembers the runner up and the mainstream sports media helps reinforce this ‘frontrunner’ mentality.

At the same time, the mainstream sports media takes every opportunity available to bash boxing, but the reality is that the ’sweet science’ more so than any other professional sport places a great emphasis on the quality of a fight as much as its eventual outcome. Fights like the Gatti-Ward trilogy, Hagler-Hearns, Hagler-Leonard are considered classics, and in most cases were very tightly contested bouts. A great case in point is the 2004 ‘fight of the year’ between Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquaio. Despite nonstop action, the official verdict in the bout was a draw.

Fighters can even be criticized for not having any losses on their record. While the highest level fighters like Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Rocky Marciano are certainly exceptions, an undefeated record can often suggest a poor level of opponent as much as it does fistic superiority. A glossy won/loss record alone isn’t enough to cement a legacy of greatness in the glorious history of boxing–that has to be earned inside the ring with heart, skill, toughness and character.

Carlos Palomino was a fighter who earned the respect and admiration of fight fans both for his championship skills as well as how he played the game. A native of Sonora, Mexico, Palomino was the welterweight champion of the world for over two years during the mid to late 70s. During this time, he became the first world champion boxer to earn a college degree (from Long Beach State University in California).

Palomino came to the United States when he was ten and, like many Mexican immigrants, started to train as a boxer during his teenage years. He displayed a good deal of skill at an early age, but delayed becoming a professional until after a 2 year stint in the Army where he was the All-Army Welterweight Champion. He also won the national AAU championship in’72 before turning pro later that year. He was brought along slowly and steadily despite a decision loss to Andy Price in’74. By the middle of the decade he had put himself into championship contention and finally won the title in June’76. Palomino scored a TKO victory over Englishman John Stracey in a very hostile environment (London, England) and became the WBC Welterweight Champion. He defended his title seven times over the next two years, before dropping the belt to a hall of fame level opponent in Wilfred Benitez in a split decision (January’79). He lost his next bout to another hall of fame fighter in Roberto Duran and decided to hang up his gloves. He made a short comeback in the late’90s, posting a 4-1 record before retiring for good.

Palomino turned his attention to acting following his boxing career, and has worked steadily in a variety of roles both in movies (mostly forgettable action films) and television (shows like Taxi, Star Trek Voyager, Highway to Heaven and Hill Street Blues). He appeared in some of the early Miller Light tastes great/less filling TV commercials. Hes also done some live theater work, in addition to generating publicity for a number of charities.

In the ring, Palomino was something of a hybrid of Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales”a very intelligent, technically sound fighter with deceptive power. His best power shot was a left hook, but he’d more frequently break his opponent down with a punishing body attack. He may have been a more tactical competitor than the prototypical blood and guts Mexican fighter, but a worthy claimant to the proud tradition of great fighters from south of the border.

Success in the NFL mandates that even when teams aren’t playing their best they need to find a way to win. The Miami Dolphins found a way to win ugly in their NFL preseason battle of Florida on Thursday night. After spotting the Bucs a 6-0 lead, Miami used a late first half field goal and scored the only touchdown of the second half to comeback for the 10-6 win.

A starting QB battle in Tampa was the biggest storyline of the game and veteran Byron Leftwich appears to have gained the edge over Luke McCown. Bucs coach Raheem Morris gave little indication as to his preference in postgame comments:

“Obviously you want somebody to jump up and take it. We’ll find out when we go back, look at the tape and evaluate this thing.”

McCown had a rough night and after the game gave a verbose no comment on his status as starter:

“It’s not for me to say. … My part in it is preparing every day, being the best I can be and getting better from my mistakes. As long as I feel like I’m doing that, then I’m OK.”

Leftwich, meanwhile, was 9 of 17 for 100 yards and came up big on several third down completions. He had very little to add after the game:

“Hopefully, I’m the guy. I felt good. I missed a few, but I hit a few also. Luckily for me on the ones I missed, I made plays on the following play to get those first downs.”

Bucs running back Cadillac Williams returned to action after major knee surgery seven months ago. Hes been limited in the last three seasons due to injuries, but looked solid in picking up 54 yards on eight carries. Afterwards, he said the knee problems are not an issue:

“The knee is not an issue to me. … I feel great. I’m just loving what I do.”

Dolphins QB Chad Pennington said that its hard to take much away from a strange game like this one. The game had several delays due to rain and lightening, the longest a 45 minute stoppage:

“It was a very odd game for us, as far as the rain delay, a lot of stoppages of play and things like that We were able to come out get a score before halftime and get a score after the half. We’ll build on that. We’ll be critical of ourselves and make sure we don’t let a win overshadow what we need to do to get better.”

The Dolphins will conclude their NFL preseason play next Thursday against the Saints at New Orleans. Tampa Bay will host Houston next Friday in their final preseason contest. Miami will get the NFL regular season underway against the Atlanta Falcons at The Georgia Dome on Sunday, September 13. Tampa Bay will welcome the Dallas Cowboys to The Cigar City on the same day to kick off their 2009 campaign.

The BC Lions may have turned the corner after a disappointing 1-4 start to the CFL season. This past weekend, a clearly motivated Lions team defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 35-20 to improve to 2-4 in CFL play. The Roughriders dropped to 3-3 in the early going in the CFL season.

Lions defensive end Brent Johnson said that the motivation for this game was simple”his team was just sick of losing:

“We were sick of losing. That was our only option – to win tonight. This was the must wins of must wins.”

Johnson led a tenacious Lions defense with three QB sacks. Overall, the BC stop unit combined for five QB sacks and three interceptions in their best performance of the CFL season.

Lions running back Martell Mallett caught one touchdown pass, ran for another and generally made himself a problem for the Riders defense all night. After the game, he praised the play of his offensive line:

“We just went out there and executed. The offensive line blocked well. I was just hitting the holes. They opened it for me and I got in it.”

BC starting QB Buck Pierce had been hearing some criticism from the Vancouver media suggesting that he lose his starting spot. His solid play in the victory may have turned down the heat for now:

“I was very proud of our offence tonight. “The way we stayed poised, the way we moved the ball. Running and throwing the ball, we were very good.”

His Saskatchewan counterpart Darian Durrant blamed the loss on his teams lack of execution:

“It was frustrating. B.C. gave us plenty of opportunities to put more points on the board. We just didn’t capitalize.”

Despite the satisfying victory, Lions coach Wally Buono realizes that his team still has plenty of work to do:

“We have to play much better football than what we did. I saw the intensity that you need, I see the resilience and I saw some guys make some plays.”

BC will travel east to play the struggling Toronto Argonauts. Saskatchewan will head home to face the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

The Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves an unlikely ally in an all too close road game against the Detroit Lions: the fans. With Steelers’ fans at times appearing to outnumber Lions’ supporters, the Steelers got a late game boost from their enthusiasm. On the field, Ben Roethlisberger threw a season high three touchdown passes as the Steelers survived by a final score of 28-20. Pittsburgh improved to 3-2 with the victory, while Detroit dropped to 1-4.

NFL betting enthusiasts who backed the Lions as +11 home underdogs were rewarded with the pointspread cover. The Lions have covered two of their five games this season, while the Steelers slumped to 1-4 against the number. The 48 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 44.

After the game, the biggest topic of conversation was the vocal support of the Pittsburgh fans. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley said that they were making so much noise that it undermined the Detroit offense’s effort:

“That worked in our favor. Those offensive linemen couldn’t hear the snap count, so they had to watch the ball just like we do.”

Hines Ward also praised the fans that made the 4 hour trip from Pittsburgh, saying it evoked memories of the 2006 Superbowl at the venue:

“It brought back a lot of memories. We had just as many fans as we did that time.”

Head coach Mike Tomlin added his props:

“Man, they traveled awesome. It was spectacular to stand on the visiting sideline and see the fan support that we had today in this building.”

Lions’ coach Jim Schwartz took some consolation from his team’s effort in the loss:

“We didn’t always play smart in that game and we didn’t always play well, but I’m proud that we battled the whole way. There were a couple places where it would have been easy for us to give in, and we didn’t do that.”

Daunte Culpepper started at quarterback for the Lions and echoed his coach’s sentiments:

“I still think we have a good ballclub here, but a good ballclub will look at a situation like this and use it to find a way to start winning these games. That’s what we have to find a way to do.”

The Steelers return home for their next two games. They’ll host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, with the Steelers a -14 home favorite and the total set at 38. The Minnesota Vikings will come to town the following Sunday and after a bye week Pittsburgh will head west to face the surprising Denver Broncos on Monday, November 9.

Tom Brady returned to NFL action and looked good in limited playing time as the New England Patriots opened their preseason schedule with a 27-25 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Brady played into the second quarter, moving well and showing no lingering effects of his knee surgery. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The Patriots also rewarded their NFL preseason financial backers by winning outright as a +2 road underdog. The combined 52 points scored shattered the posted total of 32 for an easy OVER.

Bradys solid play was no doubt a heartening sight to Patriots fans, though he had little to say after the game on the specifics on his performance:

“I need the work, we all need the work. You can’t duplicate this on the practice field.”

Instead, Brady focused on the less tangible aspects of life in the NFL:

“There’s no place I’d rather be. This is the place where I probably have the most fun and enjoy it the most. Preseason game doesn’t have quite the feel of a regular-season game, but to be out there on the field with my teammates and celebrate after a win, and the bus ride home … those are the things you probably enjoy the most.”

Tight end Chris Baker was more effusive in discussing Bradys comeback effort:

“I thought he was sharp. He went out there and moved us up and down the field and put some points on the board.

New England took a 21-6 lead into the locker room at halftime, but would have to hold on for the victory after Philadelphia responded with a 16 point third quarter. The third period onslaught allowed the Eagles to hold a significant edge in most offensive categories including total yardage and time of possession. They had a shot to win the game late, but David Akers missed a 43 yard field goal with just under a minute remaining.

Brady, the two time Superbowl MVP, sat out the entire 2008 preseason with an undisclosed foot ailment. Hes expected to get a significant amount of playing time in exhibition games this year, however, as he tries to regain his regular season form after missing the entire 2008 regular season due to a knee injury.

The Patriots will open the regular season on Monday, September 14 as they host the Buffalo Bills. Philadelphia will begin their regular season campaign on the road in Charlotte, NC against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, September 13.

The Atlanta Falcons are making a statement that they’ll be a factor in the NFC. The Falcons starters behind QB Matt Ryan were almost flawless, and left the reserves with a 14-0 lead before eventually beating the St. Louis Rams 20-13 at the Edward Jones Dome on Friday night.

Running back Michael Turner was unstoppable in his limited playing time, churning out 65 yards in the Falcons opening drive. After the game,he spoke of his team’s impressive offensive showing:

“We wanted to come out and execute. They were preaching that all week and we wanted to show that on game day. We’re way better than we were last year at this time.”

Tony Gonzalez caught QB Matt Ryans TD pass and after the game praised the young team leader:

“He’s a great quarterback. It’s obvious he’s figuring things out. He has a great arm, talent, and knows how to play with poise.”

It was a disappointing home debut for new Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo, who saw his team blown away from the opening whistle before a half empty stadium:

“Just like I said to the team, we’d have liked to have started out a little better. You’ve got to come out and take it to them.”

Rams safety O.J. Atogwe echoed his coach’s sentiments:

“This was a fabulous game for us. That’s the reason you play the preseason. Going against a team like Atlanta, a top-caliber team, it allows us to reassess what we’ve been doing.”

Falcons coach Mike Smith was most excited about the improved play of his rushing defense:

“We were much improved against the run. It’s something we have to continue to get better at. We still had some missteps.”

The Falcons will continue NFL preseason play next Friday night as they host the San Diego Chargers at the Georgia Dome. The Rams will play the Bengals at Cincinnati next Thursday night. Atlanta will get the NFL regular season underway on Sunday, September 13th as they host the Miami Dolphins while the Rams will head to the Pacific Northwest for a game against the Seahawks in Seattle.

In a muscle building plan, the workouts which you do can make a big difference between a useful tactic and one that won’t achieve a lot for you. The good thing is that there are a large number of muscle development exercise techniques you are able to incorporate into your routine to help improve your muscle tissues and keep you in good shape.

To cultivate large, muscular thighs, you should perform lots of barbell leg squats and dead lifts. The amount of resistance you are putting on your thighs whenever you conduct these types of physical exercises will push your muscle tissues and compel improvement. That, of course, is the point of an intense workout strategy to begin with. Lifting weights with your legs rather than your arms will assist the hamstrings and quads to become tight and fit.

When exercising your arms, the muscle building routines you should count on will include plenty of barbell and dumbbell curls, and also bench presses. Don’t make the mistake of giving a disproportionate amount of consideration to the weights themselves, but rather to your triceps and biceps muscle groups to press them to work as tough as you are capable without over straining.

When you make this happen, it certainly won’t be very many days before you begin to see the progress when you flex your arms. Wonderful stomach muscles are chiseled in much the same way as any other muscle group. That is, they have to be strained, worked, and pushed to be able to become beautifully shaped.

A daily workout that involves crunches, sit ups and other movements which push the six pack will firm them up, even if you have an additional layer of ab fat that ought to be melted off so the ab muscles can be seen. Try dangling from a chin up bar and raising your legs up, or use one of the many devices at the health club particularly designed to sculpt abs. While working the upper back, a pull-down bar device will make a noticeable difference. This is a two handled bent bar that is attached to weights with a pulley system. You pull the bar downward either in front of or behind your head to build your shoulder muscles.

It is essential when selecting bodybuilding workouts that you start off with ones you are physically skilled to try. Keep in mind the way you do the workout is as important as the individual training workouts you decide upon. Quite simply, technique makes a difference, so do not risk undue trauma by rushing in before you understand how to try the work.

Do a bit of research or ask a fitness coach at the gymnasium regarding what sorts of muscle building workouts work specific groups of muscles, after which incorporate those of most interest into your workout strategy. Choose a reasonable physical exercise program that builds up (at least to a point) all your chief muscle groups so you look and feel your very best – not merely after finishing the plan, but all along the way.
